Steve Irwin dead

THE Crocodile Man, Steve Irwin, is dead.

He was killed in a freak accident in Cairns, police sources said.

It is understood he was killed by a sting-ray barb that went through his chest.

He was swimming off the Low Isles at Port Douglas filming an underwater documentary and that's when it occured.

Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality this morning at Batt Reef off Port Douglas.

It is understood Mr Irwin was killed around midday, Eastern Australian time.

I'll bet he was saying to himself, "What a glorious beast!" just as it killed him. Well, just like all of us, he was playing with fire, but in another way. He died doing what he loved. I hope we can all say that some day.

Reports are he was not screwing with the Stingray. I heard he was just swimming over the top and a stingray buried in the sand and it stung him. More like wrong place, wrong time.

The radio news story I heard said that he saw it and swam in for a closer look. It apparently felt threatened and attacked too quickly for him to escape. Of course, all the real details come out later.

You can nearly see him... swimming towards the sting ray, reaching out for a touch, commenting on how the skin feels...

Too bad. I really enjoyed watching his show. He really seemed to enjoy the animals.

Yeah sad to hear. Really though this guy had like 30 lives. He just ran out in the end...only a matter of time really.

I've always wanted to go to Australia and going to Irwin's live show at Australia Zoo was on my "must do" list. Sad to hear that he died so young.

I think we all knew he'd "get it" some day, but somehow it's still a shock and a surprise. I just thought I'd be watching him on TV when "WHACK, WHOOSH, DANGER DANGER DANGER, CRIKEY THAT WAS CLOSE" as if it were "live." I'd just like to think ol' Steve would've said, "You can't blame the stingray. He was just defendin' his terr-uh-tree." It's sad that he's gone. I'd have been dead a thousand times over if I tried what he did on a regular basis.

The incident was actually filmed, and it is being debated whether it should be released to the public! This would be an instant hit.

i agree ... it shouldn't be released. i don't even think accident prevention is a justified reason.

however, for the sake of scientific research it would be justified.
