Hey Joe,

About the lightest and warmest bags are Western Mountaineering bags. www.westernmountaineering.com I am looking to trade in my overrated REI down bag for one of those.

As far as 2 person bags, buy 2 bags: one with a left zipper and one with a right zipper and they should zip together. With mummy bags, you usually have two separate foot sections, but they are roomy enough.

for car camping, my wife and i use 20 degree and 40 degree columbia bags. rectangular bags suck for backpacking, but are nice and roomy for car camping. infact, this last weekend, we had both little ones (5&3) in them w/ us. 20 on top when it's cold, 40 on top when it's warm.

cant help w/ doubling a backpacking bag.

I have also done the "zip two bags together" thing when the zippers are on opposite sides. They were both lightweight down backpacking sleeping bags.

It doesn't really work for us however. He can sleep nekkid on his sleeping pad with only the bag drapped over him when it's 25 out. He's an insta-furnace.
