how long is the piece of accessory cord you cut for an autoblock

Depends on how much friction you want, and what material you are using. Since an autoblock is just a big loop wrapped around your rappel line, I would say....no more than 18 inches? YMMV. Try it out and see for yourself.

You'd be surprised how much length you need. More than 18. Seems like I've used maybe 3 feet or so. Knotting the two ends together with a double fishermans (standard for prussiks) will take at least 8 to 10 inches, less or more depending on the diameter of cord. Looping it on your harness will take another couple. Been several years since I've used a prussik or autoblock so its fuzzy. Yeah, try it out and see for yourself, the stuff is cheap. Buy a 5 foot length and whittle it down if needs be.

FWIW: Autoblocks are seldom/never used in canyoneering.
