I saw this topic on another forum, and thought it was a good idea. Either post the image you are using for your wallpaper, or just take a shot of your current desktop.

We'll try to keep the width less than 800 pixels wide, to eliminate the side-scrolling.

NEED INSTRUCTIONS? To take a picture of your Desktop, minimize all of your windows, then hit the "Prt Scr" (Print Screen) button. You've just copied an image of your screen. Then, open up a program such as "Paint", and paste the image there. Reduce the image size to about 800 pixels wide, Save as a .JPEG image, and throw it up here.

These instructions are for Windows only. I figured the Mac users know what they're doing. :cool2:

:popcorn:Thanks! It was made at the Grand View Point, Canyonlands, in March 2004, at sunset. It was one of those amazing evenings that I never wanted to end. We'd been hiking all day, and as the sun went down we had perfect light, and it started to get cold. I just wanted to sit there forever.

Here are some more images from the evening...

Is it a .bmp file? Those are always huge. Also, what method are you using? If Paint isn't doing the trick, try that Microsoft XP Powertoy.

It's jpeg. I'll try the Powertoy, but I was looking for a link that was up here once upon a time about resizing photos using Irfanview I think. Anyway, that's what I'm currently using.

You are probably running it at 300 dpi, if you have Photoshop load up the pic and change it to 72 dpi, then your size will drop.

Wasatch Rebel
08-24-2006, 09:35 PM
I don't have photo shop, but Paint and Irfanview both say it's 72 dpi, still at 907kb. I tried the powertool, but for some reason it doesn't completely install, or if it does, I can find it nowhere, even in Microsoft's search function. Well, I find the unextracted files easily enough, just not the program.

With the powertool, all you have to do is right-click on the picture, and you will see the option to Resize Picture in the menu. You don't actually have to open any program to run it.

I think I've isolated the problem. Even though I saved it as a jpeg, when I look up the info it says this:

Desktop Picture.jpg
640 x 480
Bitmap Image

So obviously it's still a bitmap image saved as a jpeg file. Do you know how to remedy this?

You can open it up through Paint, and save it as a JPEG file. This is done as the filetype, and not only adding the ".jpg" to the end. I think it used to be that easy, but not anymore.

The default type to save as from Paint is a Bitmap. You always have to change it to a JPEG when you're saving.

Moab Menu guide. That's one thing I've found to be sorely lacking in Moab. And that's good food---for breakfast anyway. We drove past McDonald's so we could eat at a sit down restaurant. I can't remember the name of it, but it was north of Mc's on the west side of the street. We spent about eighteen bucks for two of us for a bad meal. I think Mc's breakfast would've been just as good at 1/3 the price. So where do they have year round goodbreakfasts in Moab?

I found myself thinking with a town as popular as Moab. there ought to be some really good restaurants for those early mornings, or after the river run nights.

Thanks! yea!! It worked!! I had a hard time figuring out how to save as a Jpeg at 800 pixels, but I did it through photohop.

Easiest way to get it to 800 Pixels wide is by using the XP Powertool Resizer (download link) (http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/ImageResizerPowertoySetup.exe). After installation, right click on the screenshot pic that you just created (JPEG or GIF) and you'll see this in your options:

http://uutah.com/forum/files/1_129.jpg

Then, choose the 800 X 600 option. And there you have it. It will automatically create a COPY of the picture that is at or below 800 pixels wide.

Very handy program.

In addition, the most beautiful moonrise I've ever seen was in New Mexico while driving down to Albuquerque. I can see in the background somebody being towed into the waves via jetski. Hell, I could do that. I think the hardest part is just getting up from the board, onto your feet.

Most of these big wave riders have footstraps on the board, like a large wakeboard.

I'd love to give it a try.

greyhair biker
12-11-2006, 04:47 PM
the problem with riding a big wave is speed, hence the jet skis pull cause you cant run that fast or swim that fast. They pull you in between sets, pick a winner, pull across the wave& down, go as fast as you can and let go of the jet ski....thats the easy part. If you go down you get buried by a 4 story building...fun stuff! :2thumbs:

We were in Hawaii last year for Christmas and I took the boogie board out. The waves weren't massive, but I gained a whole new respect for the ocean. When I finally go the hang of it, the first big ten footer i caught, I wan't quite in front of it, but on top. It broke right near the beach and I got a mouth full of sand and the wind knocked out of me. I stood up in waist deep water trying to open my eyes with all the water and sand in them, when I get pummeled by another wave. I blindly made my way to shore half swimming and half crawling. That ended the day for me. That shiz is scary stuff.

how uncaring and insensitive you are to make fun of a computard. (BTW, I'll clean up my desktop if I ever figure out how to :lol8: )
:cool2:

The majority of those icons are "shortcuts" to get to the software they represent. Do you actually go to the desktop screen and click on those things or do you get to them through the "Start" menu?

You can make those icons a little smaller and the pics on the computer a little better by changing the screen resolution. It looks like your setting is 800x600 pix. You can slide it up a notch and still have everything fill in the monitor area. Go to your desktop and right click on it and click properties. At the top you'll see a bunch of tabs, click on the "Settings" one. At the bottom left you'll see a little slide thingy for screen resolution. Yours is probably all the way to the left (800x600) slide it one up towards the middle to 1024x768 and then apply. The screen will do some funky things and then it will ask you if you want the change. Accept it and then take a look at those icons, they should be smaller and the stuff you see on your computer will be a little sharper.

This isn't exactly a desktop picture post so much as a post about something really cool now that I have upgraded all the Macs in our house to 10.5 Leopard. It's screen sharing, and with it I have my eMac's desktop on my iMac and vice-versa, and I can do everything just like I was sitting at the other computer. It's pretty cool, actually.

I hate to see this thread die. I don't know why, but I think it's one of the cooler ones.

I was looking through the images from the first vacation Abby and I took together, which we named "The High Road" from a song lyric, and ended up setting this as my desktop. It's from Goosenecks of the San Juan State Park, July 2003...

This is the file I use for my wallpaper. No screen shot needed. I started pasting pictures of my daughter together. This is it's current status. I am adding more soon.

My current wallpaper is very simple...a lily pond in Cape Breton NP, Nova Scotia. I never keep icons on the desktop, as it would hide my wallpaper to do so. I put them in a separate folder with a single shortcut to the folder kept on the desktop, off in a corner.
