Story of man being pinned by rock is questioned

Posted: 6:39 AM- Authorities questioned a Woods Cross man's story that he had been trapped for days after being pinned between a boulder and tree in Big Cottonwood Canyon.
Steve L. Marsden's cries for help were heard by a driver headed out of the canyon who stopped just before 5 p.m. Monday to look at some wildflowers, Salt Lake County sheriff's Sgt. Paul Jarosack said.
The driver hiked about 100 yards up the Whipple Fork trail to find Marsden with his right leg apparently pinned by the "good-sized" rock, which was about 1-foot thick, 1--feet wide and 2-feet long, Jarosack said. The area is near Storm Mountain.
"(Marsden) said he just came up here to do some reading and slipped or slid and the rock came down with him," Jarosack said.
Marsden initially was "a bit fuzzy" about the details and thought he may have been pinned about three days, Jarosack said.
However, investigators found that the man's cell phone, which had been left in his car, had been used to call his home twice about 5 a.m. Monday, Jarosack said late Monday. He said it was not known if the calls had been answered.
He also said Marsden only had a bruise, which Jarosack said was not consistent with being pinned by the rock, and officers had learned that the man had been having emotional problems.
Jarosack said Marsden, who was undergoing evaluation at University Hospital, was sticking with his story about being trapped but was vague on the details.
About the same time that Marsden was found, he was being reported missing by Woods Cross police, who said that his brother had told them he had not been seen for five days.
Marsden had an empty water bottle with him when he was found.
Jarosack had said earlier in the evening that it was unusual that Marsden had not been found sooner, since he was not far from the road and on a trail frequented by hikers.
