View Full Version : Things to do near Bryce/Cedar City?

My ILs are now in town (their kids were here last month) and they want to see redrock now (but not be in 100 degree heat) after seeing their kids' photos from Capitol Reef. So I have one night at the Bryce hotel booked for next week. Hopefully it will be a tad cooler up there.

They don't hike, so this will be a driving tour really. Then mabye hit Cedar Breaks NM on the next day since it looks like higher elevation (aka cooler temps!).

What else can I do with these non-hiking, non-adventourous folks? Is there something in Cedar City to see? Go see one of the state parks in that area?

Basically I just need a little agenda to take up 2 (or 3) days near Bryce Canyon NP. Oh and MIL can't go on HWY 12 - she will die of shear fear on that drive.

Or maybe hit somewhere on the way back to Cache Valley?

You could just shoot them and put them out of their misery :assault:

We can't get out of the car..... our feet will get tired! :roflol:

Parowan Gap is pretty cool

Meadow Hot Springs is on the drive home

While not near Bryce something to think about is Nine Mile Canyon, which is the coolest by car trip in Utah.

But I still think shooting them might be less painful :rifle:

Parowan Gap looks nice! Thanks!

They have seen Nine Mile only because we used to live in the Uinta Basin about 7 years ago. One of my favorite places.

Yeah, vacationing with the ILs os OH so much fun.

You want red rock? Drive through the Kolob Canyons section of Zion National park. Its just a few miles south of Cedar City. I've never been through there, but it looks way cool from a distance. Lots of big red rock if thats what they want to see.

Maybe check out brian head: watch a mountain bike race or just ride the chair lift. http://www.brianhead.com

Good luck

I know that drive rockski, it's exit 41 or 40. Very very nice. I will add it to the list of things to see.

The man can even walk down a flight of stairs without pain. He's a heartattack waiting to happen!

Maybe you should just take him to a stripper club..... feed him hot wings, beer and cigars...... and just get it over with :haha:

Yes, and don't miss it if at all possible.

There is also the Iron Mission Museum in Cedar City. The Utah Shakespeare Festival and The Neil Simon Festival (if you are into that sort of thing.) There are several drives that take you to over 10,000 in Cedar Breaks National Monument. You can stop and look over the edge for some spectacular views, almost from the car! Brian Head is a great option.

As long as it hasn't rained really hard drive down the Cottonwood Wash road to Grosvenor Arch and then south through the Cockscomb area. There is a short section of narrows that even the non-hikers can do. Stop at BLM Visitor Center in Cannonville for a view of how the early settlers lived in this area and you can also talk to Dave or Donna about the road conditions and get a map. Here is one photo along the Cockscomb.

Turn around after about 15 miles and then head back to Bryce. Drive to the south end of the park and then stop at every viewpoint on the way back (12). Each is unique in its characteristics.

New thing is the Paunsagaunt Wildlife Meseum that just built a new facility just past the Pines (Europeans call this the Penis) Motel. I think is about $7.50 per person but the exibits are awesome. For free you view the bison family in the enclosure just outside the meseum (sic).

I wonder why Cannonville isn't listed on the BLM Utah Offices page?
