When I was kid we would take trips to Delta to collect Trilobites. I still think about those trips, we had the best time.

If you are looking for something cool to do with your kids you can't beat a Trilobite trip. Its like digging up dinosaur bones. All you have to tell them is that Trilobites are way older than dinosaurs and they will be hooked.

There is a great private quary near Delta that guarantees 10-20 Trilobites per person and they simply charge by the hour for access. They even provide the hammers and show you where to look.

Even if your not a kid this is a great trip.

I'm afraid I can't tell you about the sharks teeth bed, but it is VERY cool.
Imagine ancient sharks teeth littering the ground like pebbles.

Probably, and for sure when a bit older. My family is from Delta, so we used to go out there as kids quite often. In addition to trilobites, there are places to find quartz crystals, topaz, obsidian, and many other fossils. One entire mountain (named Fossil Mountain of course) is made entirely out of large fossils. :2thumbs:

If your 3 year old likes bugs he might enjoy this.
They don't squirm much :) which is usually what attracts 3 year olds.

It can be hot and dirty.

While you are there hike up Notch Peak. Worth the effort and you are only a few miles from the trail head.

I second the hike to Notch Peak. One of the finnest hikes in the state.

I loved trilobites when I was 3. Still do.

If anyone is interested in hiking Notch, the route from the north is much more scenic than the standard route through Sawtooth Canyon, and only slightly more difficult (I have climbed Notch several times and by a variety of routes). The access is rougher though. Also, there are some nice hot springs and caves in the area.

Anyway, the brief route description I wrote up for the northern route a few years ago is below:

Is Delta down toward Great Basin NP? Like if you go directly west you'll hit the NP?

I"m thinking a weekend trip to hung for trilobites (yea!), hike Notch Peak and camp at GBNP. Probably in the fall?? I imagine it's pretty hot down there in the summer.

Sounds like fun to me!! :-)

Yes, but something like 100 miles away

PS, there is much more to see down there. Some of it:

A white volcanic peak embedded with quartz crystals.

A peak just like Devils Tower, but smaller, complete with columner jointing.

Granite pinnacles thrusting straight out of the ground.

Volcanoes made of orange rock.

Literally thousand of petroglyphs.

Many caves and hot springs.

A mountain made entirely of fossils.

An area with quartz crystals almost as big as your hand.

Topaz fields.

Huge obsidian chunks and opals.

Slot canyons.

If you are interested in some of these, just send me a PM, and I can give a bit of info.

Even at fifty "3" I had a great time there last year. Your three year old will take home more treasure and memories than if he'd of found the real thing. They last for ever, don't crawl and fall a part after dying, mom will love that.
