I will be leaving for the Wind Rivers on Sunday night and hiking in on Monday morning. Then coming back on Friday or Saturday. Meeting up with the Ogden posse for some fishin', hikin', and explorin'. I will be trying to track down the elusive 15lb laker (Story: http://uutah.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=935 ) that I lost last year and get my jakes lure back. Bastard!! :lol8:

What does everyone have planned? :ne_nau: Who will be out raising hell!?

I have friends coming up from Austin who usually come up about this time of year every year. They are a party unto themselves. :haha: We will do the "usual" - picnics in the canyon, going to see things they haven't checked out yet, etc. Sometimes the company is better than the destination. :2thumbs: I live in Draper and the city does the "Draper Days" celebration every year that usually coordinates with Pioneer Day. The best part is sitting on my veranda with (insert favorite drink here) and having a bird's eye view of the fireworks that go off at 10 pm Sat night in Draper Park. I plan to try Shan's recipe for pulled pork this weekend as well and my friend will be doing his famous Texas brisket. I'll let you know how it turns out. :eat:

I'll be in SLC. I'm thinking of hiking Broad's Fork Twin Peaks. There's a pretty good route description on Climb-Utah.

You comin' Shane?

If anyone wants to meet at Rubys Inn Bryce canyon the night of the 24th or 25th I'll be there riding the Paunsaugunt trails.

We plan to leave Marysvale the morning of the 24th, ride the Fremont Trail to Casto Canyon and on to Bryce. Then ride the hills around Tropic reservoir the 25th and return across Mt Dutton on the 26th.

Probably catch the rodeo one night and see if we can make a good impression on the non-english speaking tourists!

I suspect alcohol will play a role in there somewhere.

If your leaving Marysville on the 24th , does that mean you will be riding on the Piute Trail the days before?

If so, post some TR

West Desert Rally!!!

I have always wanted to do a big trip in the West Desert of Utah, and it looks like this weekend it is going to happen. The plan is to leave Friday afternoon and head to the Deep Creek Range via Wendover. Camp two nights in Granite Canyon and climb Ibapah on Saturday. From there we are going to drive south and check out the Gandy Warm Springs and Crystal Ball Cave. At that point we will be closer to Highway 6/50 outside of Great Basin National Park. So we will drive home via Delta Utah.

I can

Since the 24th isn't a real (federal) holiday, I won't be doing anything. I will be moving this weekend, into a rental, otherwise its business as usual.
I never celebrate it anyways. No offense, but it means nothing to me personally.

Sooooooo....you only celebrate holidays IF they MEAN something to you? :lame:

I bet it would probably mean something to you if you had it off......right?

So since you're atheist, do you work on Christmas too?

James,

I grew up in Marysvale. Probably spent 20% of my life knocking around the Tushars. I suppose oxygen deprivation explains a few things.

At around 9am on July 22nd you will be able to find me sitting at the pass

If you happen to arrive you are more than welcome to hike with us to Delano Peak. The goat herd is huge now, last report was 165 gorgious white Mt. Goats in the area. At least two of our group plan to hike off of Delano to meet us again in Pine Creek (aka Bullion) at the miners park.

I have thouands of pics of the Tushars. Many are in the book.
Most are somewhere on www.atvutah.com

BTW, large portions of the Tushars are about to be declared wilderness.
The process is well along. Several wild and scenic rivers will also be declared.

I just celebrate 'cause it's a day off, but if you don't get time off, it's not much to celebrate.

You are lucky to grow up near such a great place. Man I would love to hike Delano again. I did it back in 2003 starting near Puffer Lake, see my TR here:
http://uutah.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2047 Both times I have been on those peaks we were lucky enough to come across the mountain goat herd. Pretty damn cool.

I am jelous that you are going to hike down Bullion Canyon. When we were up there in 2003 I saw the trailhead just off Piute ATV #1 and thought that it would be great to hike down to the falls and have someone pick me up below.

Well, actually, I work shift work, so I work whatever federal holiday is on my schedule. Planes don't stop flying on holidays. If I happened to have it off due to regular day off rotation, then I'd still give a rats ass.
Christmas means nothing to me. My wife insists that something be made of it, so I go along. We, however, have no stake in Utah nor Mormon history, so Pioneer day means jack diddly squat to us.

I'm not really sure what I'll be doing but I guarantee I'll be celebrating, I'd have a few screws loose if I didn't celebrate just to celebrate!

More than likely I'll be on the south slope camping and pillaging a few trout infested waters with my fly rod. I will be kicking it off by going to the Days of '47 rodeo Thurs night. The wifes grandpa is on the committee and we get treated like rodeo royalty with front row seats and buffet style food back in the back room.

Redman: Do you know the Johnsons in Marysvale or the Blackwells?

RedMan

Reedus: Yes, I know all of them. There are two seperate and unrelated Johnson families. Went to HS with most of them.

James: I am a lazy slob, but I have ADD and can't sit still. Seriously, if you ever see a red ATV that looks abandoned its probably mine. I'll be back sooner or later. Probably after dark, I get a lot of miles out of my LED headlamp.

If you ever want a great hike start on top of Mt Edna, skirt the base of Mt. Holly on the east and drop down into bears hole (or alternatively over the top and down to the old Mt Holly Ski resort). The ledges of Mt Holly hide a lot of Mt Goats. I can sit and watch them for hours.

You could have continued your hike along the peaks all the way down to puffers lake.

Those pics make me miss my 4runner.

I hate the fourth of July, but I gladly take the day off. Don't get me wrong, I love America, I just hate baking in the sun at the parade and fighting traffic after the fireworks. That's why I went to Zion to hike canyons.

As for Christmas, I hate that too. Okay, holidays suck in general 'cuz even though you have the day off there's some relative that pissed at you 'cuz you went hiking/mountain biking/camping and didn't attend this or that family function. K, I'm done.

My take on most holidays is that they are blown out of proportion, over commercialized, and mostly lost thier original meaning anyways.
If someone has the time off, and chooses to do something that means something to them, I say good on ya.

I agree with you two. I really do like Thanksgiving because of the food and football. The others I could do without. Yeah, to much hype but I do like the days off. :naughty:

I guess I'm just a humbug. I don't even like Thanksgiving. I could be on the road for someplace cool on Wednesday night, but nooo. I've gotta stick around so I can see people I just saw at my birthday "party" two weeks before, and then try to drive some place while fighting a turkey induced food coma. :frustrated: Okay, the feast is nice, but I can stuff my face at a buffet in Vegas. The football is okay, as long as Dallas loses.

I think the over commercialization is part of my issue. I saw Christmas yard decorations for sale this week. I swore I chould smell brimstone and heard a "muahahahaha" coming from somewhere.

Here's a good rule, I think. No Christmas before Thanksgiving. No Thanksgiving before Halloween. No Halloween before October 1st. No Christmas junk in the stores before Halloween. Basically, let's get one holiday over with before we start on the next. The retailers can go two holidays ahead since they need some lead time, but no more than that. Violators should be slapped with a heavy a fine. :chairshot: All proceeds could go to some worthy cause like buying PSP's for kids on welfare or something like that.

What was this thread about? What people are doing on Pioneer Day? I'll be thinking about how grateful I am that Brigham Young brought air conditioning units across the plains, pulled by teams of oxen, so I don't die of heat while I'm at work.
