On Saturday as part of a Tom Fest we did a down Fat Man's Misery, up Parunuaweap and out an exit I call French Canyon.

Why is it called French Canyon you ask? Simple.... Joe B claimed it in the name of France :lol8:

Anyhoo.... its a pretty cool route down a nice slot, through the best part of the seldom seen Barracks and out a little water filled side slot that the French are planning to use in their next retreat :haha:

The trip included Bette, Kyle, Chris, David, Christina, Doug and myself. The only member of the group I had done a route with before was Christina so it was fun getting to meet so many new faces.

And we all owe a big thanks to Christian who helped set up a complicated car shuttle.

Will this route be published on Climb-Utah?

It basically already is....

Use the the Misery description from Checkerboard Mesa down Fat Man's to P-weap. When you get to P-weap go up stream several miles using the P-weap description in reverse until you hit the exit canyon (French Canyon) listed in the Rock Canyon route description. Exit out French Canyon.

Rock

I'll be updating my Misery and Parunuweap route descriptions in the near future. I might add this deviation as a side note to the bottom of my Misery description. The route is about 9 hours. It takes 3 hours to set up the shuttle with real 4x4's. No wantabe 4x4's allowed.

Oh yeah..... Parunuweap was flowing at about 38 cfs when we did the route. There is one major obstacale you must defeat when going up P-weap. It might get really hard to by-pass with flow over about 60 cfs.

Looks like I screwed up. Had I known there would be bikinis in Misery I would have bagged the attempt on Imlay, better scenery. :haha:

In any case I'm glad I could help. It was fun to talk with Doug and get to know him. It was enjoyable to plow through all that sand up there.

French Canyon is a real canyon....

Joe B named the canyon. On the USGS maps it is un-named.... So I guess Kelsey would call it P-weap 5th Canyon or something.... maybe river mile 25.2..... :roflol:

I was teasing Joe B. earlier today about the name..... I asked if it was called French Canyon because it is used to retreat from Parunuweap :lol8:

I think French Canyon will be featured in the next Soldier of Surrender Magazine :roflol:

From the Checkerboard trailhead over to drop a 4x4 and back to Checkerboard is 3 hours.

Good part is you set it up the night before. If working to create a weekend combo platter with Rock Canyon it would not be bad at all.

Hiking from the river, up French, to the 4x4 takes about 45 minutes. Not a bad hike out at all.

Rock Canyon Trailhead is a primo campsite :2thumbs:

Hey Ice,

so right across from the mouth of rock cyn there is a extremely short canyon ... then just downstream from that, on the north side, there is a very long & very narrow canyon ... have you explored up this from the bottom? know about the descent? looks like it could be pretty great from the sat images.

I don't know anything about the canyon you mentioned. I think eventually several interesting south side P-weap canyons will be discovered, and I think the key to accessing them all will be the French Canyon Retreat.

I have now exited French from upstream and from downstream, its is very convenient and a nice hike in p-weap from either direction. Only word of warning is hiking up canyon might be very difficult at flow above 50cfs.

I don't know anything about the canyon you mentioned.

well, it looks like difficult access, but it looks deep and dark, with possibly a huge rap in and a huge rap a 2/3s down as it seems to switch faults or something.

it could be really really good. :2thumbs:
