I will let this run for a week or so and see what the "people" want.
Please refer to this thread if you don't understand. http://uutah.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2831

Hmmm. I think that may sound like a good idea. This way, an "innocent browser" wouldn't come along and run into a flamefest. You'd have to login to get to the good stuff.
I think it would probably lead to more registrations, if it's constantly a hot spot. I haven't placed my vote yet though.
I'm used to flamefests. I'm on lots of forums and they are just natural!

I voted no. First we have this so called basement thread, then I will want a toilet thread, then I will stop frequenting the porn sites, then the Internet loses its purpose, finally no more Internet. Keep the porn and Keep the Internet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Pr0n made the internet what it is today, it's like taking out a root user from a unix system, that can't happen!
Basement idea is pretty cool, I voted yes, but keep the pr0n alive!

HEY!!! I've reconsidered..... I don't want a basement thread..... just keep running things as you guys have been. Perhaps the first step in stamping out a flame fest is to move the thread to the current Members Only section. If that doesn't work, then lock it.
Whatever.... doesn't really matter to me. I like playing in your sandbox :haha:

Why?
Because I don't like a million topics to pick from and I think what happened is an isolated incident that will be dealt with faster and better next time around.
In other words.... don't fix it if it ain't broke...
YMMV

i doubt it's an isolated incident, but perhaps such incidents will occur infrequently. i am just not sure locking threads is the right way to go. dealing with individuals may be more appropriate.
one interesting aspect to these webforums is that, while they are "owned" by those who establish them, they take on a life of their own as members join and post and define. it's very difficult to predict what will happen as new members join, some of whom may have much stronger opinions, emotions, and words than already have been demonstrated.
if you wanna hide the flamefests and social dysfunction of the membership, then a basement section is the way to go. it'll protect the image of the site to outsiders, but it won't do much to change the interactions of the membership and could even intensify "the problem."
i personally don't think this is exactly necessary, but if the owners would prefer to maintain the image of the site, that's their choice.
this problem did not begin with RELIGION it began with LAND MANAGEMENT, SUWA, and cross-country travel, which is a bona fide outdoor issue...the breaking point WAS religion however, whether coincidentally or not. unless you impose restrictions/moderate/etc. i don't see how you are going to "solve" any of "problems" completely. if hiding the problems is the solution, so be it, it's a heck of a lot easier. the problems are with the individuals and the emotions and thoughts that they get caught up in. this is further accentuated by the permanence of the posts and the lack of face-to-face interactions....ahh the internet...it's a brave new world.
there is one thing very clear to me, as i said before, you're not gonna please everyone. some are offended by the slightest comments, others have a higher threshold. some are offended by the mere existence of negativity or debate. others are offended by the absence of opportunity for commentary and debate, no matter how unbridled. one thing i am inclined to say is "if you don't want to read it, don't read it" ... it's kinda like life that way.
CONSISTENCY, however, IS HIGHLY IMPORTANT, to bring scott's original point back around full circle. whatever you choose, just try to be consistent in how you implement it. as has been repeated a billion times, it's a great site and keep up the good work!! :2thumbs:

I'm not sure what the inconsistency was. I always do my best to blot out nudity and extreme cursing. True, sometimes I just can't get to it in time, but that's why there are other moderators.
Was something approved in one thread, then banned in another?

so, i am not saying that the moderators were being inconsistent. scott's point about inconsistency had more to do with the members posting, and this inconsistency was part of the fuel that erupted into the craziness. my point merely was that i believe its very important, to be fair, that any action taken by the moderators/admin be consistent.
sorry for the confusion.

No, I think he is referring to the SUWA Dumbass remark maybe being considered a personal attack. Which is a matter of opinion to begin with.
I just figure as the moderators of this forum gain a little experience they will handle it a little better and faster next time. After all, that was their first major food fight.
No harm - no foul..... everyone is back to being friends again, which is how it should be. :feelgood:
Maybe moving flamefests to the basement is the best thing, I hate to moderate anyone. In the SUWA thread I stopped reading when it turned into a bunch of rants and lost its value. I personally got annoyed when it turned into a bunch of new threads that were just trolls....

nope, actually i was referring to the irony scott pointed out of the reactions to some of the comments towards OHV users on roadless land (some of which where in jest)....that is, in a thread titled "who[m]ever is running suwa is a dumbass. :haha: i mean shane, what the hell did you expect starting a thread like? you instigator you! i know you were acutally serious, and i know what you were trying to say, but come on, you must have know that was going to bring on the fire.
i agree, those running and moderating this forum are becoming more experience in dealing with such issues and they are going to try out a lot of different methods, figuring out what works best. the folks running this site seem to be a great bunch of people. i very much enjoying reading what everyone has to say. i hope you all don't think i am prick or nothing, sometimes i am lazy to post unless i really have something to say, sometimes those words can be strong. if i have offended anyone, sorry for that.

And that is the "Catch 22." On one hand many love the debates and ignorance that show up in these sometimes heated topics. Some lean one way while others lean the other and few are right down the middle. That's life.
Then on the other hand you have the guys that have brought this site to what it is. Understandably they don't want the image of the site to be dragged through the mud, giving it a black eye in the outdoor community. I feel with all the great, info packed, target areas that are on here which, get attention during their times of the year and the year round targets, a political/environmental target won
I'm still gonna host a forum. It may wither on the vine, but hey, it's part of my web hosting package, so I might as well use it...

I don't care if there is a basement or not.
It is weird because I feel like a vote in favor of it, would be a vote in favor of more trash on this site, and a vote against it just keeps trash in the main topic area.
I know that a lot of people don't care for me too much on this site with my religious, and political conservative views, but I have already had to stop using this site as much because there was too many posts that do not have disclaimers for being offensive, and many posts that start out clean end up offensively.
I enjoy a lot of the news and stories that are posted on Bogley, and I still love the outdoor sections. I especially enjoy trip reports because it makes me want to go to the trips others have just had. I however, have (I would think) noticeably stopped using this site as much due to more "mature" content. I should not have to feel uncomfortable on an outdoors forum.
Anyway, that is my two bits. Go ahead and flame me.

I think one of the qualities of this site is the diverse group of people that belong to it. :2thumbs:
(jmo) If a poll was taken, I would think that most people on this site are religious or at least spiritual in one way or another, and perhaps politically conservative as well. FWIW Even though I can have a rather wicked sense of humor, I am politically conservative, but then again (as my nieces like to tell me) I am "old school". :haha:

Man we are resurrecting some old gems. :haha:
Boy these are all tough arguments and again it is really hard to please everyone. Only a small handful of topics have been locked on this site since 2004 when it was started. Perhaps more should have been locked or handled differently, I don't know. It is sad that you cant ask people to behave on their own and you cant expect a moderator to want/have to be a cop. Nobody wants to be a cop.
So I guess enough people wanted the poli/envi sections back. This was a percentage of the type of conversations that tend to heat up. We wont ever be making specific sections for a few of the other topics. Perhaps making another section in that bottom category for general flamefests or heated conversations to be moved to, which don't fit in the poli/envi section. Cause yeah peeps don't like to see some of the smut in general and sometimes we just don't have a place to move it. Hopefully in this section it could die or have to be locked if death threats are mentioned. :haha: The gen disc should be fun, lighthearted chatter. This is the case for the most part, we do have some real characters on this site and it is so much fun to be a part of the daily banter.

Maybe you should do the Political section as a Political / Basement where the political topics go as well as some of those gems about hot babes and bad jokes, then make it a members only section where only registered users can access it. This way, those perusing the site for the first time wont have to be exposed to our little idiosyncracies and heated debates.

yes, i think folks' tolerance levels differ greatly. some choose to ignore, some would rather not see.
i can imagine many folks offended by some of the stuff in the general section, as well as some stuff elsewhere.

well, one could simply make the general section members only, as it barely has anything to do with the outdoors

Hey, actually I'm planning on making a whole section dedicated to those two. :lol8:
No, but really... The tough part about splitting Env and Poli is 95% of environmental topics will involve politics. Discussion involves how people vote on the issue, and what certain politicians or groups are proposing with a certain area. So both forums are heavily related to each other.
It would be nice to come up with a name that included both topics like Envolitics... But what I'd really like - this is my opinion - is to have a dumping ground for everything ugly.
All kinds of flames and very questionable content could just be dumped down in the "basement". Some topics would probably be locked down there, and maybe some would remain open.
It's just impossible to please everybody, and it's still difficult to please a majority. It just has to be progressive. We make a change, feel it out, make some more modifications....

the way i have been dividing it up is that most stuff environmentally related (involving politics or not) go into the environmental section. this section is primarily filled with threads on land use policy with smatterings of other enviro topics.
in this regard i think the division is straight-forward.
the only topic that i think really is confusing as far as placement is global warming, as it has become as much a political topic of debate as an environmental issue.
but the poliforum has also been my dumping ground for contentious religion and social issues. should they be here? perhaps not, but it's a good place to hold them for the time being.
gun and hunting/bloodsport issues are another hot topic of contention on this forum.
if there is a basement, i think it makes rightful sense to keep the enviro section separate, perhaps if need be, keeping it to only to on-topic enviro stuff related to the outdoors, such as land use policy.

You can go back and read through every post I have made on this site. Although I have disagreed with people, I have never called anyone a bad name or attacked anyone personally. I have grown to love Rev. Although our politics do not match up, I think we both really respect each other.
So don't get me wrong, I am in no way arguing against intelligent conversation or debate. I just believe that personal attacks against people as opposed to ideas, and an increase "mature images, and topics" will lead to more people leaving the site, and probably attracting the wrong crowd.
