A long weekend is on the way and I will be out till Wednesday and hopefully most will be too. What do y'all have planned. Fireworks, hot dogs, beer, hot women? What sport are you engaging in? :naughty:
I am headed to Bear Lake. I may try fishing on the east side a bit. But mostly I will be riding my dirt bike all over hell, in a 200 mile radius of the lake. :ride: Perhaps some wakebaording and fooling around on wave runners.

What about hot men?
Anyway, I will be working. The joys of the service industry providing food ad lodging and entertainment to you working folks who get the long weekend. I will be in the Springdale parade though. I'll be the one in the pink prom dress with the large water gun! Oh yeah - can't forget the Springdale fireworks - always fun to watch the hill catch on fire.

Heading down to Zion to do a bunch of canyons. LJ, do you work at a restaurant? We are planning on eating out some of the nights, if you are working maybe we will stop in and say hi. Can't wait, it will be my first non one or two day weekend trip in a while.

Yea I'm sure it will be, I guess this is where the 12 person limit is nice, pretty much guaranteed not to see anyone in the slots, maybe one other group. The hike out the narrows on the other hand, as well as others, will be nuts. We should have a big crowd for the last rappel in Imlay. LJ, a couple other uutah guys, and a few non-uutah guys will be down there the weekend of the 4th. I'll be there from June 29th to July 4th.

See you in Zion. I've got a campsite in The Narrows reserved for the night of the 29/30th, Mystery reservations for the 1st, and the rest of the weekend (thru the 4th) will be at the whim of what's available at the window. I've scheduled at least an hour on Saturday to sign autographs for the herd of awed tourists at the base of Mystery Falls :dropmouth:.

White-water rafting on the American river in Nor Cal. Woooo hoooo!!! :2thumbs: :2thumbs:
:haha: i did that last year for the first time, with a few of my college buddies and friends. it's been a staple for a couple of them since before high school. they keep asking the question, when are we gonna get too old for this? i think the water gun battles between rafts are pretty darn fun in that hot hot sun. it's just too bad how much litter gets thrown into the river. i hear there are major clean up efforts, but i wonder exactly how much you can actually do? so many people out there, i hear it's the most traveled river in the united states.
enjoy!

Did you do the American River in Nor Cal? If so, what fork of it? North, South, or Middle? Did you do a full day? Well, my gf and I are scheduled to do the Middle Fork for the full day trip (17-18 miles). Supposed to be class 3 to 4 rapids. Didn't want to kill her on our first trip! Whatever it turns out to be, I am sure it will be lots of fun. Oh, and the other crewmates better not chicken out, because I want to hit the "Tunnel Chute" which is like 90 yards blasted thru solid rock by miners long ago.

Yep the american river in nor cal. except, we are doing VERY different parts of it. basically you are doing the part in the foothills of the sierra, the section i was referring to was the EXTREMELY popular section along the city of sacramento (where one of my best friends grew up). there the few rapids are very tiny. basically it's a float which a ridiculous number of people do each year on the 4th of july. i just naturally assumed this is what you meant.
but as you are doing a proper river trip, i mean it even more...ENJOY :2thumbs:

No, since we will have to drive like 10 hours, we are doing it the right way. I didn't want no pansy trip with 80 year old grandmas floating by us. I believe our start point is Auburn, CA, just north of Sacramento. We are actually gonna be on the river on July 2nd, so hopefully it will not be that bad.

First, disposable cameras don't have very good lenses. It's almost always better to pay $10-20 bucks for a cheap camera and buy film. plus many disposable cameras have the wrong film (400-800 speed) for the outdoors. but it may be worth your while to buy a waterproof digital camera.
second, while the part of the american river by sac *may* be pansy, it's a seriously MAJOR party. mostly very young people having a great time on the river, having water fights, boozing, eatin', sunnin', enjoying a great, usually hot day on a nice refreshing river. there are some cool rope swings to catch air on, and some nice spots on the river to pull up on. it's a trip seeing so many people all doing the same thing. i just don't like the inevitible trashing of the river. but there is a major effort to clean it up, after it's done.
that all being said, i agree, it's not worth the 10 hour drive. i did it mainly because i had heard about it for years, i was out in n. cali for a week for a wedding, 16 of my friends were doing it and had decided not to go to high sierra music fest that year. but i would take a proper river trip ANY day.
and yes, you better bring photos back wich ya! my friends have done the upper forks and loved them!!
I just purchased Pentax W10 for my water adventures. I got it at Costco for $270, but you can find it online for about 215-240. I like Costco because of their return policy :)
Anyways, it's a waterproof 5MP camera with 640x480 30fps unlimited zoomed movie mode. It's perfect for river running, it's small, light and has a huge LCD screen. I plan on velcroing it to my helmet when I do Westwater canyon in August to show the first person perspective of the cool rapids. Usually when I film through some tough stuff (biking, hiking or rafting), I forget to hold the camera upright, so most of the fun stuff ends up being of the ground (oops!).
Check out that camera, so far it's been rated the best for water/dust adventures. http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Pentax/pentax_optiow10.asp
PS: LJ where do you work around Zion? I go down there at least twice a year.

I'm not bagging on your trip at all. I am sure your "float" was a blast with loads of hot chicks in tiny bikinis and all. I was kinda talking more about a non-party event river float with small rapids kinda for families. I just like a thrill, and wanted my money's worth is all.

Yeah, but sometimes I have gotten lucky with some decent pictures from a disposable. I am actually thinking of stopping back by REI and seeing if I can get a pelican box or otter box that allows me to keep my digital camera dry and use it in the case without taking it out. Hey, they have one for the IPOD like that.

This will explain to you better http://www.blm.gov/utah/moab/ww-info.html It shows the put in and take out places. Most people do an overnighter, but ranger told me that people do it in 10 hours as well. Depends if you want to row all day.
There are 11 named rapids, Skull is being the worst one, Room of Doom being the crappiest one to get stuck in. It's best adviced to go there with someone who ran the canyon before (that is why I am looking for someone else to go on Aug 11th ;) ). There were already deaths on this canyon this year.
You can get your own permit by calling the number on their site, you get those by 2 month in advance. During the summer everything is usually booked out because of limited campgrounds.

Ive run it about a half dozen times. Someone has flipped (rafts) in Skull every time Ive run it including one person in our group having an almost-dead experience. Its easiest at medium levels. At low and high levels, skull is especially mean. Westwater isnt like Cataract with big pools after each drop and boulder fields on the sides to swim to if you flip. The walls often go straight up from the water and the drops are pretty continuous for several miles... Fun stuff, but serious. Weve always done it in a day, its not too bad, although there is quite a bit of flat water at the end. Are you sure most people do it as an overnighter? Seems most of the people we see rigging up for it are also doing it as a day run, with the overnighters being the exception.
PS The "room of doom" is part of Skull, as is "the Rock of shock" and "the big hole on the right that everyone flips in"

Want me to Hammergate that bastage? I will say this, you probably look fantastic in a pink gown wielding a super soaker while riding on a float. That's hysterical, speaking of pink, I was in San Fran over the weekend, there was all sorts of pink stuff everywhere and my lovely wife and I shopped at Forever 21, they had a rack of one semi male clothing and three stories for the ladies. Holy crap, I've never seen more pink outside OFarrell Brothers but a bonus, my wifey kept it to 80 bucks and fit in nicely to size 4 white capris.... you don't understand, she's 5'10" and birthed two babies.... sorry LJ, I'm seriously in love....
Hope you have a great 4th darlin...

Ah Rangers are famous for telling half-truths or flat out lies to direct people the way they think things should be done... or sometimes they're just flat out ignorant. But maybe more people are doing it as an overnighter these days... its been a few years since I've been down.
I have no idea. I already took a week off when brother in law and sister in law came out. I was just in Indiana for 5 days. I may need to ration the rest of my vacation for a time when there are less people out and about.
I think I want to go somewhere now! The question is where.
Down south will be too hot, up north is still snowed in higher up.
