Navajo Backcountry Permits

One of the most asked questions in canyoneering is where and how do I obtain a hiking, backpacking or canyoneering permit for the Navajo lands. And where is it legal to visit and what areas are closed.

Here is the information you need:

Good luck, dealing with the Navajo Nation can be an interesting lesson in patience and understanding. :wallbash:

Given that navajo land is vast and that different offices have different jurisdictions, it seems the best way to get permits for any canyon OTHER THAN waterholes and antelope is via mail. For example, recently i had some confusion at park office at Antelope Canyon. :patch:

Mail-in is simple and relatively quick. to pay, they request a money order or cashier's check.

The Navajo Nation Parks & Recreation has recently changed the price of their permits.

The old fees were $5 per person per day for hiking and $5 per person per night camping. So a day trip used to cost $5 per person, and an overnight trip cost $15 per person.

The new pricing schedule that went into effect April 1st is $12 per person for a 24 hour period, good for hiking and camping in the boundaries of the Navajo Nation. So a day trip now costs $12 per person. A two day trip now cost $12 per person. A three day trip now costs $24 per person.

Unfortunately the cost of trips longer than three days quickly adds up.

The Navajo website has not been updated as of yet.
