I always have a hard time when an outdoor magazine lists places that are "unexplored" or "never before seen". The worst part is that they put locations of historic and fragile sites. So lets advertise where these awesome places are at so every wanna-be can jump in his/her SUV and leave the city to visit these places. The magzine may say don't touch but we all have a curious side that must touch artifacts for some odd reason.

As I fumed over the latest rave in 'Adventure' magazine I started to wonder how many people would actually find these sights. Granted that most will say 'wow' and 'cool' through the article, will they actually ever check it out? By the time they get a coating of dust on the freshly armor all'ed dash will they turn around and find a hotel in Moab and stick to the paved routes or will they actually push through and discover the undiscovered?

I am not a freak naturalist by any means, but I want the undiscovered for me! I want to bribe with cold beer and beta on other areas to find my travels, I want to wonder if I am lost the whole trip because their is not another foot print in sight, I want to discover an anasazi sight because I deserve it, not because it is in a nationaly published magazine. Maybe I am just raving for no reason, for every time I follow the poor directions of a magazine I find the adventure I sought, usually not even following the original plan, I end up somewhere totally different with my own story to tell.

Does the magazine article actually drive people to discover the undescovered or does it do as its title reads, discover the underscovered of your own life. Does it put you in the area and you fill in the blanks, or do people actually find these places with adventure magazine in hand and a will to see the underscovered.

In the end I really wonder: Is media exploiting the unknown for money and ruining it for the rest of 'us', or should I not be so worried because if they really want to see it, it doesn't take a magazine, its been done before, you just have to ask.
