View Full Version : Censoring on the forum?

Well, we've had a few opinions on certain aspects of the forum rules.

I just thought it would be nice to get a poll going, and some of your thoughts on how to make this forum better.

What rules would you like done away with, or otherwise put in place?

Keep in mind, some people want their families to be able to log on, and see their pictures here.

But on the other hand, some of us won't have our families on this forum, so no need for censorship.

Let us know what you think.

I think for the most part, people know what is appropriate, and what is not. I think the best policy is to let the people govern themselves up to a point. The Yahoo canyon forums do this. For the most part, conversation is civil, and if somebody steps out of bounds, OTHER MEMBERS let them know they have crossed the line -- instead of MODERATORS.

Sometimes (and very rarely) somebody will completely cross the line and say something completely inappropriate. This usually results in other members coming out of the woodwork and verbally beating the offender over the head. I have never seen posts get so bad that they are snipped by the moderators. Usually because everyone knows where the boundaries are, and they respect them.

So my advice is...let members do the moderating (as far as what they deem is appropriate). I think the Moderators should ban members who are blatant spammers for porn sites and other offending material (online casinos, etc), and possibly snip the rare message that crosses the line.

Keep it clean. I would like to be able to recommend the site to others but who I would consider would be limited if theres a lot of skanky talk.

Go visit http://www.boldering.com Read through a few posts. The intelligence that eminates from this site is more like a black hole.

That's what happens when you get a bunch of retards that can't control themselves, and the moderators don't help out.

The way it should be (in all aspects of life, but especially regarding our country):

Americans (us) accept personal responsibility. The government is there to make sure that we follow the rules and standards we set for ourselves. This country was founded by men that could control themselves, so they didn't need Georgie running every aspect of their lives from thousands of miles away. Forum Moderation = mini US Gov't.? :flag:

My point is: If you know that what you do is going to offend someone, or make it hard for someone else to use the forum at work or school, don't do it. Don't do it because you have a little respect for that person. That's all. Just be civil.

And if :blahblah: above doesn't convince you to be nice, leave. Minority rights, but majority still rules. Tough beans.

let me point out one more "unamerican" thing. The people who think that they should not be even slightly moderated didn't even take the opportunity to vote . . . typical.

Here is my 2cents, and I'm not sure it's even worth that much

I don't see a reason to censor anything unless you have a troll who keeps coming in and typing random crap, I actually can't stand these people and think they should be banned.

I think if someone puts in a random "f" word here or there then that's their choice. At what point do you stop censoring, is "hell" or "damn" a swear word? I'm from the east coast and those words were everyday language to me.

I don't think less of tripledeluxe because he said the "f" word, I have other reasons to think less of him. Does it mean he less educated? I don't think so, I have many friends who have phd's and swear more than anyone I know.

So I guess in short, It does not bother me if it's valuable input and not random crap? If someone wants to swear in a intelligent conversation I don't care. I've read some of the dumbest posts in the world that had no swear words at all.

Just a quick clarification while I'm in this state of mind. The "f" word doesn't bother me at all. I think the "c" word that rhymes with "bunt" is just about the only swear word that gets any reaction out of people these days.

The point of censoring the forum from things that might be considered R rated is to make it accessable to everyone. That's a perfectly intelligent thing to do.

I probably swear more than most of you guys combined, but I don't drop f bombs in front of my mom. How's that for reasoning?

I don't care about the swearing myself.

But I have this knack for feeling uncomfortable for OTHERS who might find it offending. I think it has something to do with having a New Jersey native husband (where every other word is the f bomb it seems for the entire state) and living in Utah! He says you can take the boy out of Jersey, but you can't take Jersey out of the boy.

I'm on a few other forums, some where anything goes at all, and some where crap is slightly offensive to some. So the sites where anything goes are mostly adults but it hasn't gone down hill or anything.

So I guess it's fine as is right now for me, but keep it clean in general.

Well, the f-bomb screener works except when the f-word is prefixed onto other words like: f**kface or f**khead. Just an fyi...

Ditto. I've got a terrible mouth when certain people aren't watching. I'll curse with the best of them, and I'm even artistic about it.

Even though we ALL curse in real life more than we do on this forum, I think the less rules we keep here, the less places this forum will be acceptable.

I am not condemning cursing, or I'd be a hypocrite. I just happen to believe that unlimited swearing will limit our forum visits.

And, this one time, I was banned from a gay and lesbian forum. It was this college experiment thing. I swear, I'm not a redneck. :nono:

brings back some tasty memories.
Both my freshman roommate and I were banned from ldschat.com... obviously, thats really easy to manage. What wasn't easy to manage was getting them to block the whole BYU subnet we were on. We had some good times ****ing with people before they caught on to us. I make for an interesting 60/f/single looking for 20/m.

"Walmarting" was another favorite pastime, we'd find a desperate rm on the chat room "looking for females" and look at his home town in his profile, and then find a Walmart located approximately an hour to an hour and half a way. We'd then log in as HotChick19[The town where the walmart was located] . We'd chat and flirt with him for a few minutes, let him know just how hot "she" was, and then say "Why don't you meet me at such and such Walmart in an hour and then we can come back to my house and watch a movie." After he was sure he had the correct place, and how he'd recognize "her", he'd log out and we could only imagine what might have happened. Good times.

They'd ban us and we'd acquire new IP addresses, make new users and head in for round two. It was a wonderful place where people actually believed everything they read on the internet. Eventually they blocked the whole network (not realizing WHO they were banning). ldschat banning BYU...those were the days... damn immature mormons.

Several years ago the Yahoo Personals were free. The guys in my office would post an ad about a hot 30 y/o female looking for no strings sex with a married man. Within a couple hours we would have 30 or 40 married men looking to hook up, spilling their life story about the wife not giving them any at home....

We would invite them ALL to meet for a drink at a little bar next to the office on Friday afternoon at 3:00..... Our office windows over looked the bar parking and entrance.... We would watch and laugh our ass off as the bar parking filled up beginning about 2:30 with 40 middle aged, over weight men, sporting bad comb overs..... I bet the bar owner wonder why business was so good Friday afternoon..... hahaha....

Everyone was looking for SurferChick, she would be easy to recognize because she would be wearing a short black mini-skirt with no panties.... hehehe.... Horny men are such dumb animals and so easy to trick...

....the games people play....

Wow, I noticed that even the word God is censored by the filters on this website. IMHO, that is nuts...but this is a free world, and not my forum to run, but I just had to put my 2 cents in. The thing is, ANYTHING (as some have mentioned) can be offensive to someone. The clothes I wear, the fact that I like meat, my haircut, body odor, the way people drive, the state or city that you live in, religon, Michael Jackson, and so on. I can understand the F word, or the like, but, ahhhh what can ya do? Ya can't fight the man...at least when you don't have admin rights!

Cowboy, that takes it, man. Ha, blocking the BYU IP address. You'd have to think the moderators on ldschat would have those IP's memorized anyways.

I learned about uutah.com Back in July when Accadacca came to Utahgeocachers.com, a forum where absolutely no vulgarity is allowed, it's very family oriented. With his invitation to visit uutah I found a group of young people that throughly enjoy the outdoor experience. Despite the age difference and the fact that I don't have half the "Know How" that you all do, I pretty much felt right at home reading about your adventures and on occasion leaving one of my own.

I found the vulgarity here somewhat mild but yet much more than I care to read. I've had a lengthy career (now retired) of dealing with people who tend to express themselves with such adjectives. I currently deal with inmates that can't rattle off a full sentence w/o using foul and abusive language. While at work, during intense situations, I've caught my self using the very same language that I've tried so hard to avoid. Sometimes it's the only way to defuse an out of hand situations (being polite and asking "Pretty Please" does not always work.) So you can see I have a unique perspective on the subject.

Freedom of Speech? We all have it, and Lord help us if we don't use it. The right to express our views, debate the issues at hand, tell our stories, and other wise communicate is something I'll die defending. But does that "Right" include the right to offend others of this forum with foul language? Technically yes, morally no. There is a "Constitution Right" to express ones self as he or she wishes. There is also, I hope, a limit to how far we'll push that right to self expression onto others. The only time I've really taken offense to vulgar language is when it's directed at me and my family specifically for the shock value.

It's a part of my world that I'd just as soon leave at work.

John, a.k.a. "Windwalker"
