The other day at the very under attended uutah BBQ. Price said that he had done a different canyon nearly every weekend this summer and beyond. I am curious to find out a real number. I am sure Shane will chime in with some absurd number. Sooner or later I am going to figure out what I have been up to over the last year. I will make a list with dates and post it here. Perhaps with links to the TR's as well. It should be an extensive list. Anyone care to do the same or give an idea. Could be just this year or total. Whatever.......

Yeah, I've been busy this summer, but I bet I haven't been the busiest.

Since Memorial Day Weekend:

Pine Creek,
Echo
Subway
Leprechaun
The Squeeze
Pine Creek again
Keyhole
Mystery
Cable
Spry
Imlay
Behunin
Misery
Little Blue John
Alcatraz
Mind Bender
Not Mind Bender
Eye of the Needle.

Not canyons, but this summer I've also:
Climbed the Grand Teton
Gone through the Darby Canyon Ice Caves twice
Bouldered my ass off
Mountain biked hundreds of miles
and I kissed a girl or two ;)

Yup, you gave me an oportunity to brag and I took it. I'm feeling a little worthless today, but the Howl is tonight, so we'll see what happens. :)

I already started a thread similar to this over on the Yahoo forums a few months ago. From that thread I learned that Shane has done something like 55 canyons this year (which is slightly lower than average?), Tom Jones has done around 45.

My list for this year:

1. Ding/Dang Loop (http://uutah.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=254)
2. Little Wild Horse (http://uutah.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=252)
3. Mindbender (http://uutah.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=329)
4. Not Mindbender (http://uutah.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=412)
5. West Fork Blue John to the Great Gallery (http://uutah.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=302)
6. North Fork Robber's Roost (http://uutah.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=441)
7. Imlay (http://uutah.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=603)
8. Upper Chute (http://uutah.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=747)
9. Burro Wash (http://uutah.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=938)
10. The Squeeze (http://uutah.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1078)
11. Zero Gravity

This is actually a pretty good year for me. Usually I get in about 7 or 8 a year.

Rock and Acca are the ones that got me interested this year, even though I haven't had time to do much.

I've only done Ding, Dang, and LWH. I've done LWH for years, with my family everytime they go to Goblin Valley.

Those are the only 3 I've done.

A couple years ago I tried to do "Water Holes Canyon". This is just south of Page, AZ. It looked pretty cool, but we didn't have time to do it. We were already late on our way down to Havasu Canyon.

Here's a link for more info on it. Anybody done it?

Boundary is in the Circle of Friends.... Tierdrop and Lomatium have other issues that would need to be resolved before I could post them. BUT... We can go down and do them later this year if ya like :naughty: they are Moab area good winter canyons. My life should be getting much easier at the end of this month.

Ya, name the day. My life gets significantly easier at the end of this month too (end of the semester).

Moab canyons huh? I'm intrigued. An earlier thread in the hiking section mentioned the lack of slot canyons around Moab. I could do nothing but agree. The only one that I know of is the Medieval Chamber.

There HAS TO be others out there, and don't tell me to go explore the sandstone fins in Arches - those are more or less "pseudo-slots." They're short and don't really fit the classical slot canyon description. Without divulging any info on "secret canyons," could you at least say whether or not slot canyons of the caliber of The Squeeze or Cable or Mindbender exist around the Moab area?

I know you are asking Shane and no I don't have an answer for you. One thing I do know however was a few years ago I was down at the Jeep Safari. I wasn't into the technical canyoneering thing at the time, but anyway we were going down some random jeep trail (I have tried to remember and asked some of the people I was with and no one can remember exactly which trail it was). Someone broke down it was a long wait while they fixed it. We were parked near a vast expanse of slickrock, so a friend, my girlfriend at the time, and me went running around exploring the area. From the top of the slickrock we could see a long, winding, narrow slot cutting through. We went to the spot that the slot dropped into the sandy desert, but it was about a 20 - 25 ft. drop, and we couldn't quite climb up and into the canyon. I've wanted to find out where we were and go back to check it out again, but unfortunately as I said before no one can remember where we were. It does however make me not buy the fact that there are no slots around Moab. I'd be interested to find out if any of them are any good too.

Eric.

P.S. Kelsey has a description on professor creek in his non-tech Colorado Plateau book. It's a flowing, non-tech slot near Moab. Haven't been there but supposedly it's decent.

I'll bet you could find it using Google Earth (http://earth.google.com/)

It's got great resolution in the Moab area, and be sure to use the tilt feature, so you can see the structures in 3D. If you can roughly remember the direction from town you were at, you could probably find the trail, and have the same viewpoint that you remember.

Use the attachment below to take you right to Moab, looking towards Lion's back, and Hell's Revenge.

Lomation is not really secret. :blahblah: Its guided by a popular Moab guide

Problem is if it gets much traffic I'm pretty sure it would be closed down.... :ne_nau:

But to help you out the pic below was taken while standing in Lomatium Canyon

Wow!! That's awesome! Sort of looks like a larger version of Neon Canyon.

Ya, Explorer Magazine had a little article about Moab in November's issue. They mentioned that Deserthighlights guide tours down through Lomatium Canyon for get this.....$140 a person!!!

I'll think about that the next time I do my next canyon adventure....for free. :roflol:

I actually think that is really cheap..... the trip includes lunch and entrance fee to a pay area.

The guide service has to pay insurance (big killer for companies), taxes, pay employees, pay for office space, telephone bills, yada, yada..... as a small business owner I can tell you this is a bargin price..... hell, you pay $75 per hour to get your car worked on at the shop!

Sweet, thanks for posting the pic Shane, that gives it away for me. I know exactly where that picture was taken from. Now to just figure out where the drop in spot and all that is. I think I have a picture of those arches somewhere in my old 35mm stash. I guess doing old person tourist type hikes can pay off sometimes.

hahaha, I was going to reply the same way. Go explore the fins in arches. That picture of Skull Arch is taken straight from Shanes site, look around a little and you'll find it pretty easily. The easiest way to find out exactly where that arch is would be to go with a ranger through the fins in arches. They charge $6 a person though, at least thats what it was when my dad and I went, back in the day.

I've asked about Moab slots and have gotten back rumors of interesting things in Onion Creek and possibly something in Professor Creek. Scott Patterson seems to have posted some beta or something about the Onion creek slots somewheres, if you track him down (yahoo groups), he'd probably share since he seems like a nice guy. Oh and it seems like a while ago i tried to figure out where Lomatium canyon was and was able to pretty much pinpoint its location with google and basic "putting 2 and 2 together" skills.. I agree that beta for such an easily accessible and popular spot shouldn't be widely published since Arches may react adversely and close down canyoneering in the park. We better tread lightly and lay low. Personally, I think fin exploration rocks. The cracks and mini-slots can be highly stimulating to work your way through. I could spend days getting lost in there.
