Trip report, Not not not not Mind Bender

Location: Mind Bender – Robber’s Roost
Date: October 8, 2005
Group: Sam, Masiel, Newby, Price, Devan, Summers
Equipment: 100’ rope, 200’ rope, 60’ rope harnesses, descenders, carabineers, slings, tech. gear.
Time: Started hiking at 10:30 a.m. Reached car at about 4:00 p.m.

How did a canyon get such a stupid name like “not not mindbender? Well, pretty much it was poor planning and coordination on our part. We had planned to do Not Mind Bender. Sam, Masiel, Newby and Devan headed down on Friday night with mostly firewood. Summers and I were coming about 2 hours behind with the pickup full of gear. Well, Summers and I thought “trailhead,” but the other guys thought “Granny Flats.” (I know, it’s a joke, no need to correct me.) So, Summers and I drove around the BLM lands looking for our friends. About 1:30 AM, We gave up and bedded down at the trailhead for Not Mind Bender. It sure was nice having extra pads, sleeping bags, etc.
In the morning, we cleaned up and headed out to Highway 24. We didn’t know what else to do. After sitting by the road for a few minutes, there came Sam. It was too late to get started on Not Mind Bender, and Sam was low on petrol, so we piled into the pickup and decided to do Mind Bender, finally getting started about 10:30.
Sam and Masiel had been without gear all night, so they didn’t sleep much. Everyone was feeling a little glum. The canyon being less than spectacular didn’t really help that out. It had its good parts, and the enormous rappel at the end of the slots is really cool. I would have to say that it would have been more fun if we hadn’t bungled it all up with poor planning and coordination.
For those who are going to do this canyon, a pair of 2-way radios would be very beneficial on the big rappel. The exit hike didn’t seem too bad, but the sun was covered, and I think we were all a little energized from the big rappel. Don’t underestimate it though, it’s very steep and strenuous.
A big thanks goes to Summers for running down the road from the top of the exit and getting the truck. HIGH FIVE, SUMMERS!!!

We made our own "dead man's" anchor by burying a dead man in the sand in this pot hole. This is for a 155' rappel, so we made sure he was burried very well.

Someone placed a bolt in a completely retarded spot right behind a nice tree/bush that could be used even more safely for an anchor.
Well, that's it boys. Am I the only one dooing canyons these days, or am I the only one dumb enough to write up TR's? Enjoy.
