High Dives at Lava Hot Springs (w/videos!)

Well, I've made this post in other topics, but this doesn't really fit there. These same videos can be found under the "trip report TV" section at the bottom, and "On the water". But, just for laughs, and for those of you who might not check that section out, here's some videos of my last Lava Hot Springs trip. You'll see some cool jumps from the high dive platforms up there.

Looks like fun! :smile: I'm sure I'd belly-flop no matter what kind of dive I attempted from that height. The highest I've ever dived from was about 15' at the swimming pool here in Price, with a water depth of 12' under me (they've since lowered the high dive).

Edit: Oh wait, I seem to recall some higher jumps at Lake Powell, maybe 20' or slightly higher--enough to hurt my feet when I hit the water feet-first.

What area of Lake Powell were you at?

Both times I've been there we camped near Hite, but it seems like ages ago (it was probably only 7 or 8 years ago). Each time was with my wife's family, but I've never gone on my own, and probably won't until my youngest son is old enough that he doesn't need constant supervision (he's 2 now and gets into everything he's not supposed to). :smile: A boat would be nice, but I'd settle for camping near the lake's edge and exploring the shoreline a bit.

Yup. Another Powell story. I did 45' from a cliff at Powell. Kinda hurts the feet but it's a good time. My buddy jumped off a bridge at mission beach when he was drunk. It was about 80' feet. He bruised some ribs and had some serious contusions.

I think a lot LESS jumps would be made, were it not for alcohol. :haha:

I always make a point to wear watersocks or sandals when jumping. Don't get cheap sandals though, or the impact will rip 'em right off.

Today, my inner bicep on each arm is bruised from so much jumping. I probably hit that high platform about 12-15 times.

Once I got the nerve to do my backflip again (from 6 years ago), I couldn't get enough. It's actually much easier (less scary) to back flip off, because you don't see it coming the entire way. It's like it cuts part of it out.

I used to be a diver in highschool (spring board 3m only), but I had a BAD accident and I would be scared to deathto try an acrobatic move now. But I bet I could jump off that one if I had the right swim suit on!

Speaking about Lake Powell cliff jumping, I dug this up.

I know this post is old news...

But I found some pictures of my friends jumping of a bridge at Flaming Gorge. The height was somewhere between 60-80 feet. I wasn't there the time they did it. It is a great place to cliff jump. There are cliffs that slope upward from the waterline forming a ramp along the side of the channel. So you basically walk up the ramp to the height you are comfortable jumping at and jump. You can go from a couple of feet at the bottom of the ramp to about 50ft at the top of the ramp just under the bridge. Here are the coordinates for the area: 40.9097

About 15 years ago I knew a guy who would go up with his wife and spend the weekend. They had a hot tub in the room. anyone know the place?

How about some LHS advice for a noob to the town?

Those dudes jumping from the bridge are nuts, that thing is HIGH. I guess the lake was pretty low when I was there last though. I know some guys who tie a rope to the bridge and swing from the cliffs. I dug up a couple jumping pics.

Lava Hot Springs is a cool little town that basically has one main street running parallel to the highway.

People go up during the winter as well, mainly just for the Hot Springs. They are pretty nice. The main one in town has a large hot pool @100' long, plenty of places to sit. In the same "resort", there are a couple of other smaller pools as well.

The motel with hot tubs in the rooms? I think there are a couple of them. I can't remember the name, but they're right on that main street.

There's about 3 places to eat. I think there's the "Pancake House" or something, the "Wagon Wheel", and I think one more place.

We always "camp" though. It's really cheap, and all of the grounds are close to everything anyways. If you want some "real" camping, (the kind you don't have to pay for) you can keep heading east past town, and turn left, following the Portneuf river. There's some cool spots about 5 miles up the road to your left.

OK for those of you that stayed there, did you not hear that flippin' train?

My anniversary is in January so one year we decided to drive up Friday night to Lava Hot Springs, cross country ski near by on Saturday, soak in the springs afterwards and then stay one more night. We got some condo I forgot the name.

But on Friday night that Union Pacific train went by - and blaring its horn from 5 miles away - at:
10pm
12am
2am
4am
4:30am
5:am
6am

We did not sleep at all, and we had the condo's bathroom fan on and I wore earplugs with a pillow over my ears. It was horrible. We left by 6:30am and I did not even see the town in daylight.

When I tell people they're like, "It's your anniversary - you're not supposed to be sleeping!" :roll:

Is that the Wall Lake Jump? It seemed around 30 feet when I did it last summer....
