I had a fantastic couple of days at Kermsuh Lake. The weather was nothing shy of perfect, not a drop of rain, one day of clear blue skies and another of fluffy clouds, I almost couldn’t believe it. Seems like no matter how nice the forecast is, you can always count on that afternoon thunderstorm in the Uintas.

The hike basically starts at the Maroon Bells trail head and slowly gains elevation for about 6.5 miles to the summit. Once on the summit, the hike down is about 3 more miles to the end.

I found the canyon rather more intimidating than anything I’d yet done and I do have a habit of rigging absurd amounts of friction when I get scared by the raps, which helps psychologically but can make them hard work!

We looked at the clouds, felt the warning rain drops, and decided if we’re wet, we’re wet.

Shad got himself a Mastercraft, so we went out to Willard Bay amidst the rain. We pulled into the South Marina and everybody was leaving because of the weather. It rained on us about half of the time, but it was a great run. It made for a nice sunset.

…and we had it all to ourselves.

On Saturday Kev and his kids (Perrin and Willow) and Robin, Aaron and I planned to do Pine Creek. The other adults at the fest were doing hikes with their younger kids and I think Randi and crew were taking Randi’s daughter and friend (young adults, not kids) to Keyhole.

After years of looking at maps, other trip reports, and blogs I was finally able to travel south to the Whitney Pocket area of Gold Butte Back way Nevada.

This area has so much to explore it would take nearly a life time. The back roads and trails can lead one to areas from Grand Canyon Parashant to Lake Meade. For our trip I had a couple of must sees on my list.

We came to what I will now call ‘The Corkscrew’. A slide down to a narrow chute to an anchor above a pothole, which then needs to be climbed out of to continue another 2 stage rappel. Getting on rappel was tough with the webbing being too long which resulted in a few quick drops for individuals. A quick swing of the leg over the lip and you were soon at the bottom of this 80’ section.
